Online Stock Trading Game

why does everyone say that you will lose money with stocks?

For the last month I have been trading stocks on a “mock trade” online…evreything is real..even the time it takes to sell and buy a stock…obviously the only thing that is not real is the money. I started out with 100,000 i divided it by 5 so i spent 20k a stock. I have not lost any money. I average about a 2.5% return daily. Sometimes I have to hold a stock for 3 days…but I still sell it and make a profit. I’m “making” thousands of dollars a day on this “game”…my strategy is between 10:50am-11:00am I go through different stocks and look at charts and if i stock is at its lowest point of the day then i buy it. But it has to be in those 10 mins…10:30 or 11:30 doesn’t work…I don’t know why this is working but im not complaining. So someone, please, because I know theres someone out there thats going to have something negative to say about this lol, please tell me why I have not lost any money..keep in mind ive been doing this for a month..not for a lucky 3 days.

Let me give you several things to consider.

(1) You noted that “it has to be in those 10 mins…10:30 or 11:30 doesn’t work.” which sounds like you tried different time periods. If you try enough random samples one will probably be profitable consistently for a limited time period. For example, if you threw enough different sets of darts at a listing of stock you might find that if you use blue darts with gold feathers the stocks picked will be profitable consistently for a limited time period.

(2) You said you have been trading for the last month. The market has been very bullish in the last month so most strategies involving owning stock have been profitable over the last month. It is not as easy to make money when the market is going down.

(3) You did not detail how you decided when to sell, but it sounds like you hold the stock until you have a small profit, say maybe a $600 profit, then sell. There is a principle most successful traders follow which says “Let your profits run and cut your losses short.” It sounds like you are doing the opposite, letting your losses run and cutting your profits short.

(4) If you are talking about a 2.5% daily return it sounds like you are picking volatile stocks. Volatile stocks can create large losses quickly when they go down.

(5) A mock trading platform can never be the equivalent of a real platform. I remember one time I put in an order to sell 15,000 shares at the bid price. I sold 100 shares and watched the value of the remaining 14,900 shares go down as the stock declined. A mock trading platform would probably have said I sold all 15,000 shares since I used a limit of the bid price. There is no way for a mock trading platform to know what would occur at the exchange.
